For other teachers out there, you might know what a terrible torture it is to invigilate an exam. You have to sit there for hours, staring into space, and think of every possible random aspect of your life. All this, while waiting for the kids to finish an exam. Not fun.
So today, during the mind-numbing hours of invigilating, I thought about life. My life, at least. See..just like most people..I struggle to get things right. Every day, I challenge myself to do the right thing, to work hard and to just..give my best. As a teacher who helps children with special needs, it can be tempting to just give a student the answer and decide that this kid is never going to learn anything. It is very tempting. But, then..there’s no learning. So, I tell myself that even if all they’re going to learn today is that the angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees..so be it. So long as they go home with something new every day.
I still get pleasures from the little things in life. Like today, when a student who normally wouldn’t talk to me, came up to me to talk about the weather..I wanted to cry. Here’s a student who suffers from Asperger’s with zero social skills and hates me because I make him do work..yet, he deemed me worthy enough to talk about the weather. Le sigh! I can’t express in words how much this meant to me. Almost like the time he barged into the staff room and threw chocolates on the table for Christmas. Almost.
The mornings, afternoons and evenings are all spent in company of children and I thank God every second of it for helping me find my true passion. Although sometimes it involves breaking up fights, screaming, and that occasional smack..it’s been so damn worth it.
Besides the teaching, life has been..like that la.

Err … i thought you were suppose to prevent the kids from cheating ?
